ABOUT THE HOLY THEATRE

The Holy Theatre is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit arts organization in New York City, with a mission to make plays and other gatherings that leave people feeling nourished, connected, and more able to be brave. The art we create, and dream of creating, is numinous, life-affirming, truthful, warm, and humane.

Our name is an homage to the director Peter Brook, who coined the phrase "The Holy Theatre" in 1968, in his influential book The Empty Space. "I am calling it The Holy Theatre for short, but it could be called The Theatre of the Invisible – Made – Visible: the notion that the stage is a place where the invisible can appear has a deep hold on our thoughts . . . " The company was founded in 2022 by Sarah Rose Kearns, who serves as its artistic director. The board of trustees consists of Georgie Castilla, Sarah Rose Kearns, Elise Pallay, Lisa Tagliaferri, Jesus Ward, Yoly Ward-Zululeta, and Lena Yasutake.

Currently, in 2024, The Holy Theatre is engaging in two major initiatives: preparing to stage the second off-Broadway production of "Persuasion" (a play by Sarah Rose Kearns, adapted from the novel by Jane Austen) in late 2025; and –– through our education and community outreach wing, The Imaginists –– offering free public programs for children and teens to introduce them to Jane Austen's life and work.
